Loving Shedhalle—Resonance. 40 Years of Shedhalle Zurich

Zurich’s Shedhalle is a space for process-based art on the city’s lakeshore. It was originally part of a former textile mill that was converted first into an assembly plant for telephones and radios, and in the early 1980s into a campus known as the Rote Fabrik (the red factory), hosting a theater and concert hall, a restaurant and bar, studios for visual and performing artists, and art spaces. Since its inception in 1985, the Shedhalle has been a place where independent artists, communities, and activists come together and work. New exhibition formats, as well as artistic practices and forms of knowledge generation, have evolved here, often ahead of their time. They reflect different emancipatory and socio-critical concerns of their respective times.

Loving Shedhalle marks the venue’s 40th anniversary. It reflects on its history, artistic and curatorial strategies, and social resonance chambers, and explores the concerns negotiated here over all these years.

Spillover is now available worldwide!

Switzerland as a leading international financial center has faced a number of challenges in recent years: the global financial crisis of 2007–09; the near-collapse of UBS, the country’s largest bank, in 2008; disputes over Swiss banking secrecy; the 2010 Euro crisis; and, most recently, the emergency takeover of Credit Suisse by its rival UBS. In Spillover, Peter Püntener, a freelance photographer and former employee of the Swiss National Bank, attempts to visually capture these far-reaching events.

At the core of the book are portraits of around 90 decision-makers who were closely involved in overcoming these crises. They are supplemented with views of rooms and buildings of Swiss and European institutions where the decisions were actually made. The effects of the bursting real-estate bubble in individual eurozone countries in 2008 become strikingly visible in views of landscapes in Greece, Ireland, and Spain, which are juxtaposed with pictures of the simultaneous construction boom in Switzerland.

An essay by Tobias Straumann, professor of modern and economic history at the University of Zurich, quotes from interviews with portrayed protagonists, while a chronology of events completes this visual account of the greatest challenges the Swiss financial center has been facing in decades, and invites a reflection on its future.

El Lissitzky und die Schweiz

Der russische Avantgarde-Künstler El Lissitzky (1890–1941) unterhielt seit 1919 Kontakte zur Schweizer Kunstszene und ihren ihm gleichgesinnten Protagonist:innen. Von März 1924 bis Mai 1925 hielt er sich für einige Monate in einem Sanatorium im Tessin auf, um seine Lungentuberkulose zu behandeln. Trotz der Krankheit schuf er während dieser Zeit Schlüsselwerke seines Œuvres, genreübergreifend in den Bereichen Architektur, Grafik und Typografie und freier Kunst. Zusammen mit Hans Arp verfasste er das Buch Die Kunstismen, das 1925 im Zürcher Eugen Rentsch Verlag erschien und zu einem Meilenstein der Weiterentwicklung und Etablierung der neuen Typografie und Grafik in der Schweiz wurde. Zudem schrieb er für die Schweizer Architekturzeitschrift ABC, Beiträge zum Bauen.

100 Jahre später wirft dieses Buch einen neuen Blick auf El Lissitzky aus der Perspektive seines damaligen Gastlandes, thematisch gegliedert in Architektur, Typografie und Grafikdesign, Lissitzky als Künstler und Theoretiker sowie seinen Bezug zur Schweiz.

Impressions of Japan

In 2015, the Swiss Musée Jenisch Vevey received a bequest that also comprised around 2,000 Japanese colored woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). Many of them originated from the workshops of the most famous artists of the Utagawa school, who were active between 1765 and 1930 and are rarely represented in European collections. They stand out due to their fine printing technique, the use of precious materials and vibrant colors, as well as their excellent state of preservation.

Impressions of Japan features two hundred ukiyo-e alongside several rare preparatory drawings (shita-e), which are pasted onto the block for printing and usually get destroyed during the printing process. The prints depict kabuki theater scenes, textile art, the joys and pleasures of Japanese society, famous fairy tales, and travels in and around the landscapes of Japan. Scholarly essays and an appendix offering explanations of printmaking techniques, types of paper used, and printmaking in twenty-first-century Japan supplement the images. This beautifully designed book will appeal particularly to experts and lovers of colored Japanese woodblock prints.

Schau Spiel Bruno Ganz. Eine Reise mit den Figuren des Schauspielers

Bruno Ganz (1941–2019) war einer der bedeutendsten Schauspieler Europas und ein Liebling des Publikums. Aus dem Arbeiterquartier Zürich-Seebach hat er es auf die wichtigsten Bühnen des deutschsprachigen Theaters geschafft und in Inszenierungen von Luc Bondy, Klaus Michael Grüber, Peter Stein oder Peter Zadek geglänzt. Mit mehr als 100 Rollen in Filmen von Regisseuren wie Francis Ford Coppola, Theo Angelopoulos, Wim Wenders, Alain Tanner, Sally Potter, Eric Rohmer oder Ridley Scott hat Ganz Kinogeschichte geschrieben.

Bis heute gibt es kein Buch über Leben und Schaffen von Bruno Ganz, weil er sich stets gegen eine Biografie gesträubt hatte. Zusammen mit dem Schauspieler hat der Zürcher Filmpublizist Walter Ruggle dieses Buch angedacht. Es widmet sich seinem Leben und Schaffen, indem es den mehr als 100 Filmfiguren folgt, die er verkörpert hat. Es bietet Einblicke in die Schauspielerei eines Ausnahmedarstellers und ins Filmemachen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Texte von und Interviews mit Wegbegleiter:innen vervollständigen das Bild. Illustriert wird das Buch mit Filmstills und zahlreichen Bildern der Berliner Theaterfotografin Ruth Walz, die auch die Lebensgefährtin von Bruno Ganz war.

Schau Spiel Bruno Ganz ist eine Hommage an den herausragenden Schauspieler und eine Dokumentation seiner Kunst.
