The Tea Towel. Perspectives on an Everyday Item

The dishwasher has robbed the good old kitchen towel of some of its practical significance. Nevertheless, it remains present in many households, hand-woven or industrially produced, lint-free or absorbent, dirty or clean, inherited or replaceable. In some kitchens, special attention is also required, as there is one for the hands and one for the dishes.

For a long time, specially made kitchen towels were a luxury and reserved for the upper classes. Industrial mass production has changed this, and today two developments can be observed: while kitchen towels are displayed as design objects in museum stores and craft stores, they are also standardized cheap goods.

In The Tea Towel: Perspectives on an Everyday Item, 13 authors, artists, and designers enter into a dialogue with the object and examine it from a literary, journalistic, artistic, technical, and sociopolitical perspective. The contributions of very different tones complement each other and create new references. In text and images, the book encourages a rediscovery of the everyday kitchen towel as a sensual object with which many socially relevant topics are associated.

The View Out of My Window
Seoul, Busan, Tokyo, Taipei, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore

Since 2015, Swiss photographer Goran Potkonjak has visited ten major Asian cities: Bangkok, Busan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shenzhen, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo. His large-scale art project documents these megacities and their architecture through images taken from two different viewpoints: from the upper floors of high-rise buildings and at street level. The result is a multilayered, precise view of each of these vibrant metropolises.

The View Out of My Window brings together 215 photographs from this artistic research—around 20 views of each city. The book thus reveals the essence of our urban present in a fascinating way: such vast cities thrive on their contradictions, in which inexhaustible energy often alternates with surprising calmness. Goran Potkonjak’s images impressively illustrate this balance.

Maude Léonard-Contant. Gathering

Maude Léonard-Contant’s imagery is nourished by language—the shape of letters, words, and fragments of sentences. It is manifested in idiosyncratic, often space-filling works that are spread out on the floor. Language is palpable even when her installations are barely comprehensible. Léonard-Contant navigates the nonverbal through meticulous articulation of shapes and surfaces, textures, and space. Her engagement with materials she loves and which she carefully selects for their erotic and narrative potential forms a syntax with which meaning is created and narratives unfold.

This book features a series of four site-specific works the artist created between 2023 and 2025 for displays in museums in Switzerland, Italy, and France. Texts by Maude Léonard-Contant, as well as essays contributed by writer and critic Estelle Hoy, curator Elise Lammer, and art historian Gabriela Christen, supplement the images.

Susan Hefuna

Susan Hefuna explores the interplay between place, time, and perception. Her practice encompasses drawing, photography, installation, video, and performance. Her art reflects the duality of public and private spaces and opens up new perspectives on subjective perceptions and realities. Hefuna’s works tell poetic stories of cities, landscapes, and cultural dialogues, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in her artistic world and perceive connections across boundaries.

Susan Hefuna is published in conjunction with the artist’s first major exhibition in Switzerland. Produced in close collaboration with Hefuna, the book offers a survey of her multifaceted oeuvre to date. The essays are contributed by curator and critic Nat Muller, art historian Linda Schädler, curator William Wells, and by Stephan Kunz, the director of the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur. A conversation between Susan Hefuna and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist rounds out the volume.
