Art for Zurich

The City of Zurich has been collecting art for more than a century to promote the work of local artists and to preserve it for the public. An equally important aim of this civic collection is to make encounters with art a matter of course in everyday life at municipal offices. Works from the collection are on display in visitor areas and on the walls in corridors and individual rooms of government buildings. They can be found as well in school buildings, retirement and nursing homes, and hospitals. Moreover, the City of Zurich lends art works for national and international exhibitions.

This book offers a flashback to the acquisitions made by the City of Zurich in 2011–21, thus highlighting Zurich's contemporary art scene. It offers background information on the approach to and the focal points of collecting. And it takes readers to selected and surprising locations of works from the collection – including some that are not quite so easily accessible in everyday life.
